Yale Class of 1866 - Class Book

[ translate ]

A very beautiful and important piece of history. 126 photographic portraits are all 5-1/2 x 4-1/2 ovals - 23 faculty or administration and 103 students. All but 8 of the 103 students are signed in ink under their portrait. They are individually mounted to album leaves, seemingly all albumen prints, but not cartes-de-visite. But wait, there's more. 1 large 10" x 8" campus photo and 26 other slightly smaller views sized 5.5" x 4.5". While there are no signatures on the negatives, many of these are surely by George Kendall Warren. Also 1 photograph of Theodore Ferris "Candy Sam" - a blind African-American vendor of candy and apples, attributed to George Warren - other versions owned by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. George Kendall Warren (1824-1884) was a distinguished northeastern landscape photographer and the most highly-regarded collegiate yearbook photographer to elite northeastern institutions, including Dartmouth, Yale, and Harvard, amongst many others. Bound in full brown contemporary morocco-grained sheep, "Class Book" and "1866" stamped in gilt on spine, Covers, binding, gilt edged pages, all in near fine condition. Spine corners have some rubbing. Several pages in the beginning have sporadic foxing but all plates are clear and in almost perfect condition. Hand written as "No. 13" inside front cover. Some of the students went on to become quite famous. Additional shipping charges will apply due to size and weight of book.
