copper engraved map; plate 31 x 43 cm. folds as issued; a few tiny wormholes and small stain within image; some smaller marginal stains; o/w vg cond.- A very detailed map of South East Asia from the French translation of Isaac Commelin's compilation of Dutch voyages for the Dutch East India Company, translated by Rene Augustin Constantin De Renneville and published under the title: Recueil des Voyages qui Ont Servi a l'Establissement et aux Progrez de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales Formee dans les Provinces-Unies des Pais-Bas. It was originally based on Theodore de Bry's map of Southeast Asia, maintaining the same location and shape of the islands and land forms and even copying the compass rose and the two sea monsters at bottom. Commelin updated the map by extending it further east to show more of New Guinea, as well as adding an inset of the island of Buton and the Buton Strait in the Celebes.
