David De Coninck - Still Life with Animals surrounding the Medici Vase, 17th Century

David De Coninck (Antwerp 1642 – Bruxelles 1702) - Still Life with Animals surrounding the Medici Vase, 17th Century
The present painting depicts a gathering of animals around the famous Medici vase, until the 18th century in the villa of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany at the Pincio in Roma. The painting is closely related to Stefano Della Bella'setching, as shown by the presence of the obelisk in the background (see picture). However, for this painting, De Coninck preferred a three-quarter view. De Coninck was a pupil of Pieter Boel, from whom he faithfully reproduced many figures, and was strongly influenced by Jan Fyt. Once he arrived in Rome in 1671, he was able to enjoy very wide popularity that allowed him to be admitted to the Academy of San Luca in 1686. Oil on canvas. Size of canvas 61,5x72,5 cm. In a gilded frame. See Price...

Jonathan Guaitamacchi - Imaginary Land / Invisible Sun
Born in London in 1961, Jonathan Guaitamacchi graduated in painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. From the ‘90s he devoted himself entirely to painting, producing mainly urban landscapes in black and white, whose unique and evocative bird’s eye views are a hallmark of his work in the eyes of the public. His paintings explore the uncontainable expansion of the urban landscape, with a rigorous formal research, immediately recognizable for its use of monochromatic mixed media and a strongly defined mark-making with writings. Araki Nobuyoshi - Yakuza Copulating
From the series: TOKYO COMEDY) 1998. The stage-like produced shot of a couple during intercourse occupies a particular position in Araki's work. Not only the absence of any accessories which place the scenery in a spatial or narrative context, as is usual for Araki, but also the presence of a male actor which presets something extraordinary in Araki's pictorial cosmos. It is striking that this man, who, like a demon, leans over the body of a woman sunk to the floor in ecstasy, is distinguishable by an impressive full body tattoo. Gelatin silver print 46 x 57.6 cm (50.7 x 60.5 cm). Matted and framed. Signed in pencil on the verso. See Price...

Burning Man
Festival Starts This Sunday

The festival, which draws almost 70,000 people each year to the Nevada desert, distributed £1 million in art grants this year to ensure many new participants will get the chance to join established artists with work on display. This year’s installations are set to be some of the most outrageous ever with a giant jellyfish, a heart that pulsates in time with the viewer’s heartbeat and a life-size recreation of a Boeing 747 airplane among those to be displayed. The event ends every year with the symbolic burning of a wooden man sculpture and of many of the art pieces that had been specially created and displayed on the festival. Dates: Sun, Aug 25, 2019 – Tue, Sep 3, 2019. [The Independent]

After 30 Years, the Stolen Masterpiece 'Madonna and Child' by Pinturicchio Returns to Italy

The Italian police’s cultural heritage protection unit found the painting, which was stolen from a private home in 1990, but has revealed little about its whereabouts since. It will soon be returned to its owners, but first, it’s going on view at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria in Perugia, Pinturicchio’s hometown. The work is going on view from August 8, 2019–January 26, 2020. [artnet news]

A ‘Worthless’ Sculpture Sold for $612,000

Last fall, authentication experts on the BBC reality show Fake or Fortune debated whether or not a broken sculpture had been made by Alberto Giacometti as its owners claimed. Ultimately, the hosts were unable to prove the Swiss master’s authorship and determined that it was likely “worthless.” But then in February that same sculpture sold for £500,000 ($612,000) at Christie’s “Art of the Surreal” sale in London. The episode had ended with Bruce and her colleague, Philip Mould, sending the sculpture to the Giacometti Committee in Paris for further review. In a re-aired version of the episode last night, an updated segment revealed that, after removing layers of paint applied to the work decades ago, the committee uncovered Giacometti’s signature and confirmed its authenticity. The custom-made “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress worn by Marilyn Monroe is expected to fetch up to $3m at auction.

The sultry actress wore the barely-there dress at Kennedy's 45th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962, is being put up for sale and is expected to fetch up to $3m at auction. Julien's Auctions is offering the sequined stunner at a sale in Los Angeles on November 17.
Made of silk gauze and covered in thousands of rhinestone beads and sequins, the Jean Louis dress was so form-fitting that Monroe had to be sewn into it. The gown will be showcased at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City, New Jersey, as part of an exhibition focusing on Monroe as an artist, from September 25 until October 22. It will also travel outside of the United States for the first time for an exhibition at the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge, Ireland, at the end of October. [The Independent]
