A fine Ottoman yatagan with Wootz-Damascus blade, late 18th century
Typically curved blade of finely grained Wootz-Damascus steel. On both sides a narrow fuller along the back, the back with chiselled midrib. At forte an applied panel with chiselled arabesques on gold ground. The iron grip ferrule and grip straps extensively gold-damascened with scrolling leaves. On the back of the ferrule a cartouche with hardly legible date (?). Rhinoceros horn grip panels. Wood-lined scabbard of heavy, part-gilt sheet silver with embossed ornaments.
