A pair of Chinese guardian lions, 18th/19th century
The pair of figures shows the powerfully built guardian lions with their cubs, elaborately carved in hardwood, all surfaces gilded. Throwing their heads back expressively, the lions both attempting to free themselves from a cub with a mighty front paw. Each mounted on a pedestal embellished with tendrils. Defects, minor repairs. The gilding somewhat abraded, the coloured paint of the pedestal touched up here and there. Length of each 40.5 cm, height 32 cm.
