Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (東海道五十三次) is a renowned ukiyo-e series created by Edo-period Japanese master Ando Hiroshige. First published in 1833‑1834, it depicts landscapes and local customs at post stations along the Tokaido route from Nihonbashi in Edo to Kyoto. The Hoyudo (保永堂) edition is the most celebrated original version of this series.
This set is a woodblock reprint of Hiroshige’s Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (東海道五十三次) Hoyudo (保永堂) edition, published by Inukai Hanga-do in Showa 38 (1963) . The complete original series has 55 main prints; this surviving set has 54 main prints, missing No. 18 Ejiri (江尻,View of Miho no Matsubara) . Also included are 2 preface pages and 2 table-of-contents pages.
All pieces are hand-printed using traditional woodblock techniques. Carvers and printers faithfully replicate the original linework and colour gradation, with each colour layer hand-registered onto washi. Each print is mounted on a dedicated mat, and the set is housed in the original Tomobako.
Due to age, the print paper exhibits slight oxidative yellowing. A small number of prints have minor foxing, while colours remain vivid and saturated. The Tomobako shows age-related wear: oxidation, dust accumulation and minor scuffs. Overall condition is good for its age.
