10th C. Indian Stone Relief Panel Lion-Hybrid Guardians

South Asia, India, ca. 10th century CE. An interesting low relief carved stone panel depicting a pair of guardian mythical lion-hybrid figures standing forward with feline bodies and horned heads. Guardian animals in front of temples are often portrayed as male and female - here the lion to the left has a broader chin and mouth, while the right animal has a slender pointed chin. Perhaps these petite figures were part of a lintel or building entrance as protective spirits. Size: 4.5" L x 1.25" W x 2.75" H (11.4 cm x 3.2 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: Private Idledale, Colorado, USA collection
