10th C. Islamic Brass Right Hand of a Noble

Medieval Middle East and Central Asia, Islamic culture, ca. 10th to 13th century CE. A fine disembodied right hand that was at one time part of a cast-brass statue depicting a member of Islamic nobility. The hand presents as if reaching out to touch or grasp something and features large, diamond-shaped embellishments atop the wrist bangle as well as the stocky ring adorning the index finger. Enveloping the hand are lustrous layers of brown and green patina with areas of the golden-brown brass color peeking through in some abraded areas. Size: 2.7" L x 1.25" W (6.9 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany
