10th C. Islamic Glazed Pottery Amphora

Near East, probably Iran, Islamic world, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A beautiful pottery amphora presenting an elegant silhouette and a vertically ribbed body, all enveloped in a green glaze that has aged to mottled hues of bronze, butterscotch, and cream with scattered areas of lovely craquelure and sparkling iridescence. Sitting upon a ring-form base, the vessel displays a voluminous body with a rounded shoulder, a pair of bifurcated, arched handles, and a flared rim. Size: 4.9" Diameter x 7" H (12.4 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990; John B. Kendrick II, son of John B. Kendrick, former Wyoming Governor and US Senator 1930s

Condition Report: Repaired with some chipping and minor losses along visible break lines. Light chipping to rim, foot, and handles, and nicks and abrasions throughout, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with rich encrustations and great craquelure to glaze. A few areas of sparkling iridescence.
