10th C. Islamic Nishapur Oil Lamps (Brass & Pottery)

Near East, Islamic period, Persia (Iran), Seljuk Empire, Nishapur area, ca. late 10th century to early 13th century CE. A lovely pair of oil lamps from ancient Nishapur: one of pottery and the other of brass. Enveloped in turquoise glaze, the pottery lamp presents a globular body with an extending spout and flared rim, all supported by a slender leg and discoid foot. A ribbon-form handle is featured opposite the spout, extending from the bottom of the body to the foot. Alternatively, the brass lamp displays an octagonal foot supporting a rounded body with a flattened shoulder and a teardrop-shaped spout, all surmounted by a lid with a bird-shaped handle. Size of brass lamp: 3.8" L x 2.8" W x 3.5" H (9.7 cm x 7.1 cm x 8.9 cm); of pottery lamp: 4" L x 2.5" W x 3.2" H (10.2 cm x 6.4 cm x 8.1 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, inherited via grandfather, who collected before 1980

Condition Report: Pottery lamp has area of loss to foot and chipping to spout, rim, and body, as well as modern applied charring / fire-darkening to end of spout. Brass lamp has broken lid and missing handle with small loss beneath spout and surface cleaned in modern times. Both have nicks and abrasions to surface. Nice remaining glaze to pottery lamp.
