10th C. Nishapur Glazed Pottery Bowl w/ Bird w/ TL

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $2000**

Ancient Near East, Iran, Nishapur, ca. 10th century CE. A beautiful glazed earthenware bowl of a wheel-thrown rounded form on a short foot and handsomely decorated with a large bird on the tondo complemented by stylized floral and geometric motifs in the field and linear bands decorating the interior rim. On the exterior rim are abstract motifs - perhaps intended to represent feathers or flora. The color scheme is brilliant - including chocolate brown, lemon yellow, and creamy beige hues - and the potter's eye for design is impeccable - with dotted passages to delineate the bird's feathering as well as that dare I say Picasso-esque avian head and the schematic quality of the decorative motifs in the field. A fabulous example of Nishapur pottery! Size: 9.125" L x 8.875" W x 3.75" H (23.2 cm x 22.5 cm x 9.5 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: private California, USA collection, acquired 1990s to 2000s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

Light earthen deposits and nice remains of original pigment throughout.
