11th C. Indian Rajasthan Sandstone - Female Celestial

[ translate ]

Central Asia, India, Rajasthan (northwestern India), ca. 11th to 15th century CE. A rare, graceful, pale brown sandstone carving of a woman standing in a graceful, dancer-like posture, with her hips out, one hand resting on her waist, the other raised, and her head turned to one side. She wears fantastical jewelry at her waist, thigh, arms, and neck, as well as large round earrings and a headdress. At her side is a smaller attendant figure, seated cross-legged and wearing a similar necklace and headdress. Above that figure, just visible behind the woman, is the head of an elephant with a long trunk. Architectural features are visible all around the scene. Size: 7" L x 8.6" W x 16.75" H (17.8 cm x 21.8 cm x 42.5 cm); 19.05" H (48.4 cm) on included custom stand.

The woman is a surasundari, literally translated to "celestial beauty", a young maiden in Indian art who poses to demonstrate sensuality and feminine beauty. These figures are often seen in relief carvings in temples, as this example probably once was, representing shakti, feminine cosmic energy.
