11th C. Seljuk Bronze Rectangular Repousse Tray

Ancient Near East, Persia, Seljuk (Seljuq) Empire, ca. 11th to 12th century CE. A gorgeous tray hammered from a thin sheet of bronze of a rectangular form with a shallow basin and broad lateral panels. The basin surfaces are decorated with repousse decorations including four panthers, curvilinear motifs, and a central discoid emblem with a four-cornered form surrounded by V-shaped motifs. The sloped walls of the basin are decorated with intricate foliate and stippled motifs, and lines of Nashki (also Nashk) script flow around rim. Covered with layers of green, brown, and russet patina, this is a fabulous example of utilitarian Seljuk artistry! Size: 12.5" L x 7.75" W (31.8 cm x 19.7 cm)

Condition Report: Repaired from several large pieces, with restoration along missing areas, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Slight bending to overall form of basin and walls, with softening to some finer repousse details, and light encrustations along topside and underside. Great preservation to repousse detailing, and wonderful patina throughout.
