12th C. Ghaznavid Greenstone Weight w/ Inscription

Near East / Asia Minor, Persia, Ghaznavid Empire, ca. 11th to 12th century CE. A finely preserved weight of a wide octagonal form, hand-carved from mottled forest-green stone with dark inclusions. The top and each of the eight sides are inscribed with Arabic script, and only the slanted shoulder and planar base are unadorned. The writing on the top is surrounded by repeating S-form motifs, and each side panel is enclosed with a thin incised striation. Size: 4.25" L x 2.75" W x 1.6" H (10.8 cm x 7 cm x 4.1 cm).
