12th C. Medieval Romanesque Stone Concave Capital

Western Europe, Iberian Peninsula, Spain, Catalonia, Medieval Period, Romanesque, ca. 12th century CE. A stunning stone capital of Corinthian form 8 anthropomorphic figures with 8 birds. The hollow architectural implement features an annular base and a castellated, square top with a human figure standing on each side as they hold the necks of 2 birds. Each of the avian creatures stands upon 2 clawed feet with tucked wings as they turn away their lengthy necks away from their human companions and towards one another to touch beaks at each corner of the capital. The head of another human figure peaks out from beneath the kissing birds, angled upside-down. Size: 5.7" L x 5.7" W x 6.3" H (14.5 cm x 14.5 cm x 16 cm)

Provenance: ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990; John B. Kendrick II was that son of John B. Kendrick, Wyoming governor and US senator
