13th - 17th C. English Silver & Iron Tableware (27 pcs)

Western Europe, England, ca. 13th to late 17th century CE. A fine assortment of 27 English tableware pieces including 5 forks, 10 knives, and 12 spoons, all made from either iron, tin alloy, or high-grade silver. Two 13th to 14th century knives have either no handle or a dark bone handle; 6 from the 15th century have lengthy blades, with 2 bearing petite brass inlays on one blade face; and 2 knives from the 16th century, 1 with a bone handle and 1 without handle panels. One 16th century fork is made from 96.18% silver; 1 from the 16th to 17th century has a bone handle; 1 from the early 17th century has its original wood handle; and 2 from the late 17th century have solid bone handles. The spoons are from the 16th to 17th century, with some bearing stamped hallmarks, engravings, or decorative motifs. Please see below for a more thorough explanation. Size of largest (knife): 9.7" L (24.6 cm); (silver fork): 4.66" L x 0.44" W (11.8 cm x 1.1 cm); silver quality: 96.18%; weight: 12.1 grams.

One 16th century spoon has a baluster handle and a London hallmark within the scoop. Two spoons are from the 16th to 17th century: one with a petaloid scoop and dark green patina, and the other with a slender handle, a pair of fish within the scoop, and leaves and vines on the exterior of the scoop. A gathering of 9 spoons are from the 17th century: 1 pewter teaspoon; 1 rat tail spoon with "NJS EHD" and "Skytte" engraved on the verso of the handle; 1 spoon with a baluster handle and "AB" stamped within the scoop; 1 spoon with "SI" stamped within the scoop and a flower on the obverse of the handle; 1 with "FSD" stamped in the scoop and a flower on the obverse of the handle; 1 spoon with dark patina has scrollwork motifs on the handle and a "W" stamped on the top of the handle; 1 ladle has a petite dancing girl on the handle obverse and a crown-on-flower stamped on the verso; 1 spoon has a crown-on-flower stamp within the scoop; and the last spoon has a crown-on-flower as well as "AC" stamped within the scoop.

Condition Report: Repair to tang of silver fork as well as fork with original bone handle, both with very light adhesive residue along break lines. Repair to handle of spoon with dark patina, with thick white residue along break lines. All pieces have slight bending to overall forms, light encrustations, oxidation, and abrasions. Softening to some stamped hallmarks or lettering. Stable hairline fissures, splintering, and/or losses to most or all of bone handles. Great patina throughout.
