13th C. Medieval English Lead Steelyard Weight

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $300**

Northwestern Europe, England, Medieval to Post medieval period, ca. 13th to 16th century CE. A hefty lead and iron trade weight, shaped like a truncated cone or frustum- although worn and chipped down over the ages. This is a compact and heavy 10 lb. (4.5 kg) weight that was used for trade and commerce, measuring precious metals or steel. These types of weights have been used in Roman times, Viking, through Post Medieval times. The size suggests use in a steelyard and the abrasions, especially the grooves, may have been from a farmer's plough - which is how many of these artifacts are discovered! Size: 4.5" L x 4" W x 3" H (11.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
