13th C. Spanish Medieval Brass Seal w/ 5 Turrets

Western Europe, Spain, Medieval Period, ca. early 13th century CE. A fascinating brass seal matrix of a disc form with an integral suspension loop on the verso. The face is engraved with a shield containing 5 towers or turrets. The encircling periphery has a legend in Lombardic script that reads: "S. IOHIS SEREM (SENOR) DA TORRE" translating to "Seal of Sir John, Lord of Torre." The emblem of the 5 towers has been attributed to the Torres family of Spain, and the surname was first used in Castile where it originated in Visigoth times. This 5-tower coat of arms is still in use today! This seal is in pristine condition, with very little wear, and a chocolate patina. Size: 1.3" Diameter (3.3 cm)
