13th C. Thai Sukhothai Pottery Spouted Kendi

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sukhothai period, ca. 13th century CE. A hand-built pottery pouring vessel known as a kendi with a protruding discoid foot, an apple-shaped body, a conical spout, and a squat neck surmounted by a broad, thick rim. The upper body of the vessel is decorated with a layer of orange-red pigment, and small areas of pigment have concentrated to form much darker hues. Size: 6.25" W x 6.8" H (15.9 cm x 17.3 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition Report: Restoration to tip of spout as well as areas around rim, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions, fading to pigment, and granular deposits across surfaces. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
