14th C. English Iron & Brass Padlock

[ translate ]

Northwestern Europe, England, ca. 14th to 16th century CE. A rectangular iron box style padlock with a U-shaped clasp and a hinged cover over the keyhole. The lock box has a rectangular body formed by thick panels with a brass strip around the edges. The frontside has a central keyhole within a raised lip with a hinged a lid to protect the key entry. At the top is the arched shackle. An accompanying label indicates this lock was found in the Thames. Size: 2.25" L x 1.75" W (5.7 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
