14th C. Khmer Bronze Shakyamuni Buddha

Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer culture, ca. 14th to 15th century CE. A cast-bronze depiction of a Shakyamuni Buddha seated with crossed legs atop a lotus flower plinth. The figure wears a simple robe and holds his hands with one open palm facing upwards. Though missing the head, the elegant presentation is accentuated with mottled brown and green patina. Size: 3.1" W x 4.375" H (7.9 cm x 11.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-James Stephenson African Art (acquired 05/20/15); Stephenson gallery invoice states it came from the Breezewood Museum collection, was purchased from Alex Cooper Auctions, and "The individual who found them was a WWII vet who built all of Thailand's airports."
