14th C. Medieval European Bronze Stamp Seals (2)

Western/Central Europe, England and Romania, Medieval Period, ca. 14th century CE. A fine selection of 2 Medieval stamp seals from England and Romania, each with flat stamp faces and integral suspension loops. First is a leaded bronze English stamp seal with a stamp face bearing two overlapping rectangles, a sleeping lion in the middle, and the letters "IESU TEPO" ("Jesus warms") surrounding the feline. The larger copper alloy stamp seal is Romanian in origin and features a central castle complete with 2 lateral turrets, a crucifix above the central tower, and the phrase, "S' CASTI CALASARIE" ("Castle of Calasarie") surrounding the exterior edge. Included are a red wax impression and a blue-green putty impression. Size of largest (Romanian): 0.98" W x 1.18" H (2.5 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Both pieces have minor abrasions and softening to finer details on stamp faces commensurate with age, otherwise intact and very good. Wonderful patina throughout. Nice preservation to details on each stamp face.
