14th C. Thai Celadon Glazed Pottery Jar, ex-Museum
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok (Si Satchanalai), ca. 14th century CE. An elegant pottery jar displaying a corseted body with a globular lower section and a conical top that narrows to a slender neck and a flared rim, all sitting upon a discoid base and enveloped in a beautiful celadon glaze that covers all but the base and foot. A series of 3 petite, bifurcated handles adorn the mid-section, each forming a graceful loop. The smooth walls feature lovely horizontal bands in low relief, possibly a byproduct of the creation of the vessel, adding a variegated effect to its surface. Note the spiraling craquelure striations that have formed as a result of the aging process! Size: 7.875" in diameter x 11.75" H (20 cm x 29.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA
