An impressive 16th-century edition of Andrea Alciati’s ‘Respona’. Best known for his famed book of Emblemata which brought him substantial recognition, He also published important commentary on Justinian’s ‘Codex’. ‘Codex’, part of ‘Corpus Juris Civilis’, was the Justinian’s attempt at organizing the laws in a systematic manner. Recognizing that the law system needed to be fixed, ‘Codex’ covers ecclesiastical law, criminal and civil law, the way laws were written and put into effect, duties of government officials, and proper administrative regulations.

This 1561 edition focuses heavily on Greek legal terms, technical vocabulary, and philological lessons. He demonstrates his accurate knowledge of ancient Greco-Roman law, enough so that this book was referenced by lawyers and jurists throughout the 16th and 17th-centuries.
