Choul was a member of a humanist circle in Lyon.
He was an antiquarian famous for his collection of ancient coins. He researched ancient Rome extensively and was encouraged in his efforts by King Francis I. Translated from French into Italian by Gabriele Simeoni, who was a good friend of Choul. He was an Italian Renaissance humanist, as well as being a military man, astrologer and historian. The second part on Turkish military customs is written by Francesco Sansovino, an Italian scholar, known for his versatility in academic studies. He was one of the most important humanists of his century, as well as a scholar and literary critic.
