by Cooper, Thomas (1517?-1594)
London, printed in the shop of Henry Bynneman [by Henry Denham]; 1584.
Heavy folio: 8 3/4 by 12 1/2", thickness 3 3/4"
First published in 1565, Anglican clergyman and theologian Thomas Cooper's (c.1517- 1594) renowned Latin-English dictionary was of the greatest importance in shaping Elizabethan education. It owes its name in part to Estienne's Thesaurus linguae Latinae (1532), and is indebted as well to Sir Thomas Elyot's dictionary of 1532 (Cooper later edited the Bibliotheca Eliotae), as well as to the literary humanist tradition of Northern Europe, notably Erasmus and Bude.
The Thesaurus was a standard reference during the formative years of many Elizabethan dramatists, including notably, it is believed, William Shakespeare (evidence of this comes from close statistical inspection of Shakespeare's word usage).
Printed in double column, partly in black letter, title with bear and ragged staff woodcut printer's device and with various ink or pencil inscriptions (some discoloration, repaired upper outer corner), very good interior condition, nineteenth century ink inscriptions to front free endpapers, nineteenth century calf ruled and stamped in blind.
