1595 Error of Pope Joan Female Pope Papal Myths + Tertullian Martyrs Raemond

Florimond de Raemond was a 16th-century French historian who is best known for his book ‘Popular Error of Pope Joan’. This book was an interesting treatise in which Raemond argued that the legend of Pope Joan was a myth. Tradition stated that in the 9th-century, a woman served as pope for a few years. However, thanks to Raemond and Onofrio Panvinio, the legend has been committed to mythology.

This 1595 edition was published in Lyon, and is noted for discussing the historical concepts of the papacy and was published alongside ‘De La Couronne du Soldat’, a translation of Tertullian’s “Ad Martyras” or “De Corona Militis”.
