15th C. European Bronze War Hammer

**First Time At Auction**

Western Europe, Germany or France, ca. 15th to 17th century CE. A fine war hammer cast from bronze with incised motifs. One end features the hammer head; a rounded and faceted shape on a short neck. The other end is a curved spike with an upturned tip. A socketing hole is vertically positioned through the center with pointed tabs around the rim for hafting this bronze head onto a pole or handle. Along the sides of the spike and socket are engraved linear and geometric motifs. An intimidating weapon with a lovely green and russet patina! Size: 5.375" L x 1.25" W (13.7 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Gerhard Hirsch Nachfolger Auction 277-280 - Ancient Objects, Coins, and Medals (February 8-11, 2012, lot 953); ex-private Bavarian collection
