15th C. Indonesian Majahapit Pottery Head

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

South East Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit Dynasty, ca. 15th century CE. An attractive hand-modeled, terracotta, hollow head presenting an expression of deep thought. A petite piece with softly rounded features; the chin flows into the short neck without much definition where either one begins. The visage is comprised of full pursed lips below a naturalistic nose and large, thickly-lidded, half-closed eyes. A very pronounced brow ridge makes this face appear as if concentrating, but with a tranquil expression. Large ear lobes extend nearly the length of the sides of the face, perhaps stretched from jewelry, although no adornments are present. It is possible that this indicates someone who has cast away materialistic possessions, much like the Buddha. Centrally-parted incised hair draws back from the brow and curls behind the ears. A sensitively carved face with fine details, perhaps capturing a person during a moment of enlightenment. Size: 4" W x 4.25" H (10.2 cm x 10.8 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex Adam Partridge, Cheshire England estate sale
