15th C. Taino Stone Hand Axes (2)

Pre-Columbian, Caribbean Islands / Florida, Taino or Arawak peoples, ca. 15th century CE. A set of 2 hand-carved stone tools that were perhaps utilitarian in nature. First is a spade-shaped hand axe with a full groove around the handle, a pair of protruding thumb rests, and a broad blade with a significant divot in the center of the blade edge, perhaps formed from countless uses. The largest tool is a smooth, ovoid hand axe with a convex, petaloid blade, a shallow groove around the upper handle, and a string-cut bifurcation along the upper handle tip. Size of largest (petaloid): 6.875" L x 3.125" W (17.5 cm x 7.9 cm)

Condition Report: Both tools have abrasions and nicks commensurate with age and use, with light pitting in some areas, and significant chip to lower edge of wider tool commensurate with use, otherwise intact and very good. Great surface smoothness throughout.
