15th C. Thai Celadon Glazed Pottery Bull, ex-Museum

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok (Si Satchanalai), ca. 15th century CE. A charming pottery candle holder in the form of a bull. Enveloped in a celadon glaze, the delightful creature presents a rectangular body supported by 4 legs. His large head exhibits a pointed snout and applied annular eyes, all capped by a pair of huge, tapered horns that curve inwards. A giant spike rises from the creature's back, allowing the adorable animal to function as a candle holder, while a slender tail can be seen at the bull's posterior. Size: 3.25" L x 1.625" W x 3.25" H (8.3 cm x 4.1 cm x 8.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
