15th C. Thai Pottery Phoenix Wine Vessels, ex-Museum

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok (Si Satchanalai), ca. 15th century CE. An impressive pair of pottery wine vessels in the form of birds, both boasting a lustrous glaze in hues of chocolate brown and cream. Nearly identical, the elegant vessels each present with a globular body, corseted neck, and a wide, slightly flared rim, all sitting upon a discoid foot. Their tapered spouts dually serve as necks and heads of the birds, both facing skyward and displaying almond-shaped eyes, curved crests, tubular beaks, and prominent wattles and basal knobs, while their flat tails extend from their exterior, doubling as handles. Unbelievably ornate, the body of each avian animal is adorned with a pair of relief wings and intricately incised decoration that details each and every feather. The base of their heads and tails are additionally embellished by a lovely band of openwork circles. Size (of largest): 8.875" L x 4.75" W x 6.625" H (22.5 cm x 12.1 cm x 16.8 cm)

Condition Report: Both have possible repair and restoration to spout, tail, rim, and body. Otherwise, both are excellent with impressive remaining pigments and detail, as well as lovely craquelure and nice earthen deposits on interior.
