15thC Sukhothai Walking Buddha Head-Museum quality. Near monumental- the full figure would have stood between 7 and 8 feet tall. Very large bronze Buddhas, Especially those of high quality, had to be cast in many parts in order to get the level of detail desired. It was also needed from a sheer logistical standpoint. This piece had the head cast in two parts. This part does not include the top of the head or the finial. It is not that they were broken off, but that they were a completely different section. This part alone for the bronze only is 14 and 1/2 in tall and 11 in wide at the ears. On its custom stand, it stands 20 in tall. It displays well anywhere, but it displays best when sitting in a high place above eye level. The way you can tell that this is the head of a walking Buddha is that the head and the face are not completely symmetrical. You can see this if you look at the eyes and you will notice that they are not completely even and that they are not exactly the same distance from the nose or the sides of the head. This Buddha used to sit above my fireplace looking straight ahead. I absolutely loved it and treasured it as one of the best in my collection, but something looked "off". I took out a tape measure and measured the distance of the different facial features to different Setpoints-I discovered that the head was meant to be set at a slight angle-like that of a walking Buddha. Stylistically I believe it is a form closely related to Sukhothai (actually a smaller kingdom not too far away that was founded by the last king of Sukhothai -called Kamphen Pet. The Kamphen Pet style Is a little more masculine and a little less stylized, But otherwise very similar to the late Sukhothai. -This is the best you will ever find, and as good as what you will find in the best auction houses or museums. It is one of the best pieces I have had in my Personal Collection or on my website ever. At this point, I've said enough and I'll let the photos speak for themselves.
