Ferrante Pallavicino was a 17th-century Italian writer known for his controversial stories and satirical views. One of these works was ‘Celestial Divorce’ – a satirical blasphemy of the Catholic Church. Pallavicino tells a fictional tale where Jesus Christ seeks a divorce from the Catholic Church for their abundance of sinful lifestyles. Obviously, the Catholic Church in Italy and the rest of Europe did not support this work; but it was pirated and plagiarized in more Protestant areas of Europe and printed in numerous languages including this 1649 French edition.
