An uncommon work dedicated to the iconology of the Virgin of Montevergine, known as the 'Black Madonna', and often as 'Mamma Schiavona' [Mamma Slave].
Held originally by legend to have been painted by Saint Luke, the icon dwelled in Constantinople before being gifted in the 1300s to the Sanctuary at Monte Vergine near Naples, by Catherine II of Valois, the recognized Latin Empress of Constantinople.
