Herman Hugo was a 17th-century Jesuit who is chiefly remembered for his work ‘Pia Desideria’. This work was a spiritual emblem book and was regularly considered “the most popular emblem book of the 17th-century.” (Daly, p.109). This highly rare and desirable work features 47 engravings of Boethius van Bolswert, a renowned engraver. ‘Pia Desideria’ illustrates the spiritual path to salvation and offers meditative verses for love and prayer by Hugo and prominent Church Fathers. The 47 plates that are included in this work, were reissued in Quarles’ ‘Emblems’ years later.
This 1659 edition was published in Antwerp and features the original Hugo Latin.
