1663 Lucan PHARSALIA Julius Caesar Civil War Pompey Rome French Illustrated

“Wars worse than civil on Emathian plains, and crime let loose we sing; how Rome's high race plunged in her vitals her victorious sword;”

― Lucan, Pharsalia

‘Pharsalia’ or ‘On the Civil War’ is an ancient Roman poem detailing the civil war between Julius Caesar and the Senate. Lucan discusses the cultural despair experienced in Rome and also exposes many of the flaws that Julius Caesar possessed in his political and military leadership. In addition to historical importance, ‘Pharsalia’ includes elements of the supernatural, dream interpretation, ghosts, and prophetic visions.

This charming 1663 French edition was published by Antoine Sommaville who used a letter to the Archbishop of Rouen by Francois de Champvallon as a dedicatory introduction. Translated into French by Georges de Brebeuf. This edition is desirable because of the 12 full-page engravings by Francois Chauveau.
