1671 Thucydides History of Peloponnesian War Xenophon
1671 Thucydides History of Peloponnesian War Xenophon Hellenica Greece French 2v
“Most people, in fact, will not take the trouble in finding out the truth, but are much more inclined to accept the first story they hear.”
― Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War
An impressive French translation of Thucydides’ ‘History of the Peloponnesian War’.
This extensive work covers a brief overview of Greek history and includes explanations as to why the Peloponnesian War began in the first place. Thucydides focus seemed to be primarily on military aspects of the war and how the war influenced social and cultural themes. In the 5th-century BC, Greek philosopher Xenophon wrote his own history of Greece (Helleinca) but it served as a continuation to Thucydides’ ‘History’ and covered the aftermath of the Peloponnesian War – something Thucydides neglected.
This 1671 French edition was translated by Nicolas Perrot d’Ablancourt.
