1686 Powers King of France Acts of General Assembly of Clergy Catholic Papal

In 1682, the Catholic Church held a general assembly for clergy which assembled for the purpose of voting on the assumed rights and powers of the King of France. It was during this Assembly that the ‘four articles’ were discussed –

The pope has no power over the king

The pope has less power than the General Council

Ecclesiastical canons regulate the pope’s power
