1690 Institutes of Elenctic Theology Geneva Reformed
1690 Institutes of Elenctic Theology Geneva Reformed Turretin Duns Scotus Philosophy
François Turrettini, or Turretin, was a Genevan Reformed theologian who is best remembered for his efforts in Elenctics – the practice of shaming non-Christians into acceptance of the Gospel. He lectured on and wrote books on Reformed scholasticism, his most famous of which was ‘Institutes of Elenctic Theology’.
‘Institutes’ used the scholastic method to defend the Bible as verbally inspired by God as well as aspects of free will and spiritual freedom. It also includes teachings on the conversion process as well as God’s true sovereignty. Historian Hoon Woo carefully notes the similarities of Turrettini’s theology to that of Duns Scotus and how both derived their philosophies from Aristotle.
