1693 1ed Bartholomew of Braga Portugal Portuguese Catholic Church Council Trent

Bartholomew of Braga was a 16th-century Portuguese Catholic archbishop who is best remembered for his contributions at the Council of Trent on catechisms and the establishment of hospitals. In the decades following Bartholomew’s, several Catholic authors, especially those from Portugal, wrote biographical sketches of Bartholomew’s life. In 1663, Luis de Granada was the first to write a sketch, which was followed and supplemented by various authors including Luiz de Cacegas, Luis de Sousa, Rodrigo da Cunha and Luis Muñoz.

This work, entitled ‘Vida de Bartholome de los Martires’ provides valuable information on the development of Catholicism in Portugal, ecclesiastical discipline, and the Council of Trent. This 1693 edition was published in Paris by Cabry.
