16th C. French / Italian Steel Burgonet Helmet

[ translate ]

Western Europe, France or Italy, ca. second half of the 16th century CE. A sturdy hammered-steel burgonet-style infantry helmet of a domed form with a thin peripheral rim, a trio of incised semicircular grooves on either side of a striated central crest, a pointed brim that articulates on a pair of rivets, and a neck flap on the verso attached with two additional rivets. The rectangular cheek pieces maneuver along thin hinges and have flared lower flaps, and five perforations form a minimalist cruciform air vent. The burgonet helmet was used by soldiers in every level of the military during the 16th century and was most popular among light cavalry units. The open, hinged design improved upon the design of its solid predecessor by enabling increased peripheral vision and air supply without sacrificing the protection of critical areas. An enclosed hallmark "N" is present on the underside of the neck flap. Size: 8.75" W x 9.625" H (22.2 cm x 24.4 cm)

For a stylistically similar example of an Italian burgonet, please see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 14.25.521.

For an incredibly ornate example of a French gilt steel burgonet, please see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 04.3.217.
