16th C GERMAN HUNTING CROSSBOW

A 16th century, German hunting crossbow.
The style is typical of the early Renaissance period. The fruit wood stock is richly ornamented with bone inlay which is further enhanced with scrimshaw decoration. The tail of the stock has two sets of initials. A large S D and a smaller A N. Also what appears to be the date 1524. The decoration on the bone includes a hunting scene a crouching lion, shells, flowers etc. This was a functioning weapon, the bolt pathway showing signs of considerable use. The stock around the nut has had a later reinforced bridle made of brass. The string of gut is also likely a later replacement. A fine example of an early bow.

Condition Report: In overall good condition. Small crack at front of stock, signs of wear due to age and use. Steel bow painted green at some stage. Trigger mechanism and some other iron pieces show signs of modern cleaning. Additional photos are available upon request.
