16th C. Indian Tulu Nada / Bhuta Bronze Figure - Bull

Central Asia, India, Northern Kerala / Southern Coastal Karnataka, Tulu Nada / Bhuta cult, ca. 1500 to 1800 CE. A cast bronze figure of a bull, standing on four thin legs and with a large head with prominent horns, a long snout, and large eyes. A rope is around the snout and extends to the back, where an opening suggests there was once a separately cast bronze rider or load. The figure stands easily on its own. The bull, known as Maisandaaya or Nandigona, is a totemic figure in this cult, which seems to pre-date the conversion to Hinduism in the region ca. 2500 years ago. As a result, the figure here combines ancient beliefs about bulls as they relate to agriculture and fertility with Hindu beliefs about sacred bulls. Size: 6.25" W x 3.6" H (15.9 cm x 9.1 cm)

Condition Report: The form is excellently preserved, with a dark green patina that does not obscure any details. An opening on the back and a small, deliberate pinhole next to it suggest that there was once a separately cast attachment - perhaps a rider or load.
