16th C. Thai Bronze Buddha Head

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ayutthaya period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A bronze head of a Buddha with eyes cast downward that look closed to reflect a tranquil state. A narrow face is framed by characteristically long, drooping ears and the head is topped with tightly carved nodules to indicate a coiffure characteristic of Ayutthaya depictions of the Buddha. The pointed nose, angular face, and pursed lips make for a delightful side profile view of this piece. Size: 2.5" W x 4" H (6.4 cm x 10.2 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom wooden stand.

Condition Report: A fragment from a larger statue. Loss of the ushnisha and area above the brow is worn. The back of the neck at the base has an abrasion. Light encrustations within some recessed areas and earthen deposits. Great patina across the surface.
