1700's - 1800's Artifact Collection, Clonoware /
Large collection of over 50 African American, Black History, plantation, slavery-era artifacts. Clonoware or slaveware shards from African American-made clay pottery, found on a plantation near Charleston, SC. by Mark Barnhart of Mt Pleasant, SC & C Daniels of Cameron SC. This collection was part of a larger museum display that came out of a 19thc plantation home open for tours for over a decade. Largest piece is a good portion of a small bowl, the other artifacts have a range of patterns, including one piece with what seems to be an inscribed letter. Most pieces average 1" - 3" size. The largest piece measuring 6" X 3". Would make a fantastic shadowbox art piece. Clonoware/ slaveware is recognized as a low fired, unglazed, hand-modeled earthenware, this particular style found in the Lowcountry of coastal regions of SC, usually on plantation sites.
