Mid 18th century French ivory relief panel depicting the Deposition, with Mary, John and Nicodemus, as well as Passion motifs such as spear, hammer, scourge, nails, ladder, and tongs. Some illegible, very faint writing on back. From French family collection of 14th-18th century religious ivories. Measures 7" high, encased in 19th century 8-3/4" high tabernacle. Unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic and not a later reproduction. One of several early ivories in today's sale. PLEASE NOTE: This is pre-ban, antique African elephant ivory.
