A rare, early 18th-century printing of Matthaeus Hemer’s account on the life of Saint Sebastian. This work; however, is not just a biographical account of the ecclesiastical martyr. Hemer discusses martyrdom through the lens of music and the arts and made Saint Sebastian out to be a legend, more than a martyr. One section worth noting is the “history of a strange disease for which the only cure was music, namely ‘tarantism’.” (Sigerist, p.214).

This work is filled with stunning full-page engravings depicting the life and miracles of Sebastian.
