A rare, 18th century Japanese woodblock print of Wakan Sansai Zue written by Ryouan Terashima or Terajima, a doctor from Osaka. This book is an illustrated encyclopedia based on an older Chinese encyclopedia that most technically means, A collection of atlases of the three worlds of heaven, earth and man in Japan and China. Terashimas collection describes and illustrates daily life, such as artisans, fishing, plants, animals, constellations, and people of different/strange lands (ikoku) and outer barbarian peoples.
This rare edition is written in Kanbun in the typical column format bound in the fukurotoji style (Keio) complete with information about cosmology and maps and illustrations of the heavens giving the Chinese and Japanese names and then explanatory text in Chinese throughout.
