17/18 Century Italian School Sepia Watercolor Classical Scene
Attributed to the Italian School of the 17th or 18th century, this dynamic preparatory sketch depicts a classical scene of sacrifice or discovery, executed in pen and brown ink with sepia wash over faint underdrawing on antique laid paper. The theatrical composition is anchored on the left by a classical soldier holding a long spear over a prone, captive figure, while a central cluster of figures leans intensely over a raised stone plinth to inspect an object or vessel. Balanced on the right by two prominently standing figures draped in classical Roman or biblical vestments, the entire sheet features a highly visible square grid used to scale the drawing up for a final canvas or fresco painting. The confident contours, graded wash layers establishing deep chiaroscuro, and structural architecture faintly suggested in the background point to a highly developed working drawing from an active master's studio or academy. Unsigned. Framed, measures 12.125 x 14.25 inches, artwork measures 6.5 x 8.5 inches.
